3 Ways to Improve COVID-19 Patient Management and Protect Your Hospital Staff Today
The protection of medical staff is crucial today. If we fail, the health care system will also fail – with tragic results. Speeding up the flow of information between ambulance teams and hospital staff is a key factor in improving patient management. This in turn, will help to protect all your staff.
STEMI technology as an advanced “smartphone-based” telemedicine
STEMI Global supports hospitals and emergency medical teams by enabling them to act as a single virtual team. Before the STEMI technology was set up in Slovakia, the emergency medical services (paramedics) and hospitals acted almost independently of each other: The emergency team would get a call. They would go to the patient, pick them up and take them to the closest local hospital. Once there, a doctor would diagnose the patient. Quite often, the patient had to be put back into an ambulance and driven to a specialist heart center which was able to treat the patient. Sadly, this is not unusual. Globally, secondary transportation rates are between 30% to 55%.

With STEMI technology, the emergency team sends data directly to the doctor-specialist. He or she can diagnose right away. If specialist care is needed, the ambulance is rerouted while still in transit. The doctor can put a treatment team together with a one-touch-button. No wasted time scrambling a team together after arrival! All of this cuts down that critical time period from the emergency call to treatment. In Slovakia, the average reduction is 1 hour. Proven medical knowledge shows: this increases the survival rate by 100-200%. It also cuts the cost of after care.

The battle against COVID-19 infection…
Now, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have enhanced the STEMI technology beyond the heart, stroke, and trauma. A new COVID-19 module has been created. It helps you in three ways:
- The medical staff at the hospital are told in advance that the patient arriving is either infected or a suspected COVID-19 case. They can be transferred directly to a specialized "COVID" unit. This reduces the risk to hospital workers – and all other patients.
- The “COVID” team are told where the patients are and when they will be arriving. This lets them prepare in time, at the right time.
- Patients suffering from another emergency (e.g. heart attack, stroke, or trauma) could also be infected. Suspected COVID-19 patients can be identified in the ambulance and the information sent in advance to the specialized treatment unit.
